Stephen Dean

Born in 1968 in Paris (FR), currently lives and works in Long Island City (US).

His recent solo exhibitions include ‘Jugglers’, Casa Triangulo, Sao Paolo (BR); ‘Works on Paper and Edges’, Baldwin Gallery, Aspen, CO (US); ‘Fever’, Le Chateau d’Eau, Bourges (FR); Sara Meltzer Gallery, New York, NY (US); ‘VOLTA’, Miami Art Museum, Miami, FL (US); and ‘Stephen Dean’, Museum of Fine Arts of Santander (ES).
Dean has also participated in numerous biennials, which include the Moscow Biennial, SITE Santa Fe Biennial, 51st Venice Biennale, the Istanbul Biennial, and the Whitney Biennial.

Dean’s work may be found in the permanent collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY (US); the Whitney Museum of Art, New York, NY (US); the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. (US); Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT (US); the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain, Paris (FR); and the Fundacion Jumex, Mexico City (MX).

In his sculptures, videos, and works on paper, Stephen Dean approaches color theory from a scientist’s perspective. Using the tools of the laboratory—including colorful NASA-designed dichroic glass, weather maps, and thermal-imaging cameras—Dean creates works that celebrate the relationship between saturated color, transparency, and light. “The way I make these pieces, it’s like a form of painting,” Dean has said of sculptures like Prayer Mill (2007), which features colorful panels of high-tech dichroic glass arranged on a postcard stand. “It’s not in the idea of turning painting into a three-dimensional space, but about the looking.” In such pieces, ambient natural light plays as important of a role as his physical materials, changing the colors of the sculpture throughout the day.
