For the tenth anniversary of the Galerie L’inlassable and on the occasion of the inauguration of the new space in Monteverita, the recent works of the 28 artists who made the history of the gallery are reunited. A catalog is also published for this occasion.

More than a list of artists, the Galerie L’inlassable has brought together a family of creators over the past ten years, most often before they have gained any real recognition in the art world. More than an enumeration of names and styles, which vary according to market expectations, L’inlassable is a community of plastic writings, federated by the first feeling that comes to mind when we look back on it: freedom. What does « being free » mean for an art gallery? It certainly means daring to take the risk of never giving in to one’s own commercial comfort, it means making a profession a periodic adventure. I believe that the most difficult movement in our daily life with artists is to never give in to complacency, to a kind of habit tinged with weariness that would gradually take away the demands we make of the forms. The most difficult thing in our relationship with art is to keep our minds awake and our eyes wide open for what is unfamiliar. It is to cultivate our intranquillity. It means surveying and defending practices that lead us into uncertain lands, where art is more mystical than political, sometimes even mute to the greatest number, draped in its secrecy, with no desire to explain itself. It means opening a window on the rue Dauphine, which has often been transformed into a kind of theatre, not for an audience, but in the audience, the shared space of the city. It is to have kept on a few square metres, with the obstinacy one can imagine, this space of the infinitely possible, in the middle of a world of shrinking ideas.

Like others I imagine, it was a very dear person who first took me into the modest space of the gallery. We entered, I believe, via the Rue de Nevers. Over the years, it seems to me that, like others, I never had a very clear idea of what was going on there. I met artists who were important to me, different personalities, often young and seeking, like me, a different perspective. I felt this benevolence that needs no demonstration. And I have always felt this fraternal connivance, which guarantees that if something must change one day, it will surely come from one of these precious and rare places in the world.

Pour les dix ans de la Galerie L’inlassable et à l’occasion de l’inauguration du nouvel espace à Monteverita, les œuvres récentes des 28 artistes qui ont fait l’histoire de la galerie sont réunies. Un catalogue est également publié à cette occasion.

Plus qu’une liste d’artistes, la galerie l’inlassable a réuni depuis dix ans une famille de créateurs, le plus souvent avant qu’ils ne gagnent une véritable reconnaissance dans le monde de l’art. Plus qu’une énumération de noms propres et de styles, qui varieraient au gré des attentes du marché, L’inlassable est une communauté d’écritures plastiques, fédérée par le premier sentiment qui nous vient à l’esprit lorsque l’on lui porte un regard rétrospectif : la liberté. Qu’est-ce que cela signifie « être libre » pour une galerie d’art? C’est certainement oser prendre le risque de ne jamais céder à son propre confort marchand, c’est faire d’un métier une aventure périodique. Je crois que le mouvement le plus difficile dans notre vie quotidienne avec les artistes, c’est de ne jamais céder à la complaisance, à une sorte d’habitude teintée de lassitude qui éloignerait peu à peu l’exigence que nous portons sur les formes. Le plus difficile, dans notre relation à l’art, c’est de garder son esprit éveillé et ses yeux grands ouverts pour ce qui ne nous est pas familier. C’est cultiver son intranquillité. C’est arpenter et défendre des pratiques qui nous entraînent sur des terres incertaines, où l’art est plus mystique que politique, parfois même muet au plus grand nombre, drapé dans son secret, sans volonté de s’expliquer. C’est ouvrir une vitrine sur la rue Dauphine qui s’est souvent transformée en une sorte de théâtre, non pas pour un public, mais dans le public, l’espace partagé de la cité. C’est avoir gardé sur quelques mètres carrés, avec l’obstination qu’on imagine, cet espace de l’infiniment possible, au milieu d’un monde aux idées rétrécies.

Comme d’autres j’imagine, c’est une personne très chère qui m’a pour la première fois entraîné dans le modeste espace de la galerie. Nous étions entrés, je crois, par la rue de Nevers. Au fil de ces années il me semble que, comme d’autres aussi, je n’ai jamais eu une lecture très claire de ce qu’il s’y passait. J’y ai croisé des artistes importants à mes yeux, des personnalités différentes, souvent jeunes et cherchant comme moi, un autre éclairage. J’ai éprouvé cette bienveillance qui n’a besoin d’aucune démonstration. Et j’y ai toujours senti cette connivence fraternelle, qui nous garantit que si quelque chose doit changer un jour, cela viendra sûrement de l’un de ces précieux et rares endroits du monde.
