Based on the idea dear to Sigmar Polke of provoked pictorial appearance, the gallery l’Inlassable is pleased to present a collective exhibition bringing together the recent works of Anne Deleporte, Saïdia Bettayeb and Anaïs Ysebaert in the window of the rue Dauphine and the space of the rue de Nevers.
From Saïdia Bettayeb’s latent images, visual accidents that the hazards of chemistry reveal to the eye, to Anne Deleporte’s rebus paintings from which emerge the everyday motifs that make up our collective unconscious, to the supernatural survivals that Anaïs Ysebaert reveals in old photographs, it is the birth of images that is at issue here.

In examining the nature and functioning of Saïdia Bettayeb’s works, expertise immediately comes up against an interweaving of techniques: neither totally photographic, since the blue monochrome prints obtained are only part of the whole, nor simply pictorial, since the canvas and the frame on which they are applied take on values other than those of surface and support. In this woven in-between, the subject in question goes beyond the field of the clear room for which it could have been intended. No doubt we need to return to one of the roots of the word photography – graphein, to paint, draw, write – to understand its link with painting, to understand that both mediums lead to an image. The poignant detail that interests us cannot be limited to one or the other. Saïdia Bettayeb does not wish to limit her images to photography or painting. It is in a desire to extend the halo of her images that her work can be fully grasped. In her own way, she participates in the imagination of water and air, forms and movements long studied by Gaston Bachelard. This imagination which, he tells us, “always presents itself as one beyond its images” and which “is always a little more than its images. “The artist’s imaginary world is therefore a crossroads. A path that wishes to cross the material to identify its poetic signs. Surface water, blue sky and constellations are thus diagnosed, controlled, detailed, and thanks to a light-sensitive mixture, appear on the fabric, or rather appear through the fabric and the wood of the frame, transparent. The present image acts a priori like a radio image. Slowly it becomes impregnated in us, and suddenly a prodigality of aberrant images explodes. In depth, the contrast and substance of the image reveal a successive set of images stacked one on top of the other. Each zone traversed gives rise to a new surprise, hitherto absent, showing a possible modication of the interlacing. A bluish interlacing praising dilution, where object, surface and support are equally concentrated in solution. These layers of modernity, both scientific and aesthetic, paradoxically destine us to an incomplete experiment: to estimate the material, to consider the qualities of each of its components, all or part of the manufacture is masked behind a sobriety and a light neutrality, hiding from view like a veil the emulsions reacting to light, and making any point of adhesion ever more null and void. A sky poor in matter, water on the surface equivocal, near and far contribute to a flatness that remains to be experienced, to be sought over its entire spectral range: a part of the object, of the screen, or of the wood, circulating in a perpetual coming and going of the images. The imaginary is expressed in this moment, in all its poetic dimension.
